DINED / Anthropometry in design

Use DINED's tools, data and resources to apply anthropometry in your design.

Anthropometry, the scientific study of measurements of the human body, can be a valuable source of information when designing products. DINED provides an overview on how anthropometric data can be used when facing design challenges. Additionally, a set of free tools makes it easy to explore, compare and utilise anthropometric data in your projects.

Introducing Mannequin, DINED's take on 3D anthropometry

01 April 2020

Over the past two years, we have been hard at work to deliver a new tool: Mannequin. With this tool we want to make 3D anthropometry accessible for engineers, designers, and ergonomists by providing an intuitive interface for exploring 3D body shape variation and creating 3D design manikins, based on large databases of 3D body scans.

Together with the introduction of this tool, our database has been extended with two new 3D data sets. We included the 3D data of the CAESAR study and introduced the new Dutch children study containing head geometry of 300 Dutch children. CAESAR and GOTO are also available in the 1D Database, Ellipse, and the Profiler.

Introducing DINED User Forum

01 April 2020

We are launching the DINED User Forum. This forum is a place for exchanging knowledge and experiences of using DINED anthropometric data and tools. We warmly invite you visit the forum and introduce yourself there. Please, feel free to ask questions on the usage of the DINED tools or even more general questions on anthropometry and anthropometric data. Do not hessitate to share your experiences and possible challenges. We are looking forward to get know our User Group and your needs better.

Tools

1D Database

The DINED 1D Database gives the possibility to compare anthropometric data from several available studies and to automate statistical calculations.

Mannequin

Mannequin allows you to generate 3D human models based on large databases of 3D scans.

Ellipse

Ellipse makes it easy to see the correlation between two different body dimensions and to determine the consequences for related product dimensions.

Profiler

Profiler allows you to compare somebody — or a persona — to a population and to other people.

How it works

Use DINED's explanations to learn about applying different types of anthropometric data in design and find additional data and resources.

Reach envelopes

Easily determine how far a person can reach in a certain direction using the DINED reach envelopes.
